Meet the fourth member of our Adventure Crew: Vandalf the Beige!

Mike started the "Astrolander" (Astro-Overlander) project in 2009, just after Annika was born.  A family friend told the story of a family-reunion camping trip where all the teenagers complained because they were missing their XBoxes.  Mike immediately realized that to prevent this, they needed to get Annika hooked on camping early, and keep the fires lit.  Growing up, Mike had backpacked, and car-camped in both a 21' Class C Toyota Camper and a 1973 Westfalia Bus.  Given that Kimberley hadn't done much camping, comfort and convenience were a primary concern.  The Chevrolet Astro was chosen as a happy "middle ground" between the iconic but aging Westfalia Volkswagen Buses and Vanagons and the large and expensive Sportsmobiles and similar modern adventure vans.  Done almost entirely as a DIY "Home Build", Vandalf has been a budget solution and brought us much joy!

Below, you'll find a broad collection of details about the van - many of which may be helpful to other budding #Vanlife and DIY and campervan builders.
